My Apron

This picture book is a true story based on Eric Carle's childhood. When he was 8 years old, he had visited his aunt and uncle for a few days. His uncle was a plasterer and always wore a white apron with a big pocket on the front. He invited Eric to help him, therefore a big white apron was made for him, too. He remembers feeling so good wearing it because he was such a good helper.

Discuss what other occupations are out there where a big white apron may be worn. But more importantly, focus on why wearing this apron made him feel so important. Cut out of white butcher paper an apron for each student. Have your students write, "I am a good helper when I __________." Go even further with this project by having your students illustrate their apron by following the directions for Eric Carle Art.
