Be
familiar with your class list so that you can call students by name when they
enter your room for the first time. This will make them feel comfortable and important.
Student's "cumulative folders" can usually be obtained from the office
before the first day. You will most likely find a picture of the student there.
You could also look in prior yearbooks so that you can match a name with a face.
Create
a wordsearch entitled, "Finding My Teammates!" and place
on each desk that first morning. The wordsearch will include every
student's name in it. Children can immediately get to work and
find out who else is in their class while you continue greeting
students at the door.
