At
the end of the day instead of begging and bribing my students
verbally to clean up their desks and the floor, I put on a clean-up
song. It has been a different song every year, but a fun song
that students like to sing to. (I have used everything from the
State Prevention Dimensions songs to the soundtrack from Mulan).
When the music turns on, the students know that this is the signal
for everyone to pick up the floor and clear off their desks. It's
a behaviorist type of reaction that cues my students what to do.
I don't ever say a word. Once this routine is established, I don't
have any trouble getting my room clean and ready for the end of
the day.
